Trump reaffirms US recognition of Morocco’s western Sahara sovereignty in message to King Mohammed VI
On the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the Throne Day, celebrated on Thursday, July 30, King Mohammed VI of Morocco received a significant message from then-US President Donald Trump. In this communication, President Trump explicitly reaffirmed his nation’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Western Sahara territory and expressed steadfast support for the Moroccan autonomy plan as the sole viable resolution to the protracted territorial dispute.
President Trump unequivocally stated in his message, “The United States maintains a clear stance: we acknowledge Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and endorse the serious, credible, and pragmatic Moroccan autonomy proposal as the singular foundation for achieving a just and enduring resolution.”
The former White House leader emphasized that “any alternative approach merely extends the current status quo,” which he deemed “unacceptable.” He firmly asserted, “This territorial disagreement must conclude without delay, and the United States remains committed to fostering progress towards this critical objective.”
In a separate congratulatory message extended to King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people, Donald Trump highlighted the “250 years of American history and an enduring friendship with Morocco,” characterizing this profound connection as “forged in trust and mutual respect.”
The American President commended King Mohammed VI’s “prudent leadership,” recognizing him as “a cornerstone of stability.” He further underscored Morocco’s “unwavering dedication to promoting peace, combating extremism, and safeguarding the security of both American and Moroccan citizens, notably through its pivotal involvement in the Abraham Accords.” This engagement, he stressed, “reflects a partnership of immense value to the United States.” Furthermore, he affirmed, “To achieve this, we will also collaborate to bolster security across the Sahel region.”
On the economic front, the former United States President confirmed that he had directed his teams “to pursue economic and social advancement initiatives with Morocco, extending these efforts into the Western Sahara territory.” He specifically identified technology, innovation, energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense as key strategic sectors for this enhanced partnership.
