Triumphal crowd greeting in Dakar suburbs as Ousmane Sonko’s popularity soars

The leader of the Pastef party and current President of the National Assembly continued his grassroots tour across the Dakar suburbs, with stops in Guédiawaye, Pikine, Keur Massar, and Rufisque. Despite recently stepping down from government duties and ongoing political tensions with the head of state, his popularity remains unshaken among the public.

During his visit, the Speaker paid a solemn tribute to one of his deceased supporters, the late Djiby Mbaye, a former political prisoner who fell ill during his imprisonment under the previous regime. Wherever his procession passed, jubilant crowds enthusiastically greeted and carried the opposition figure on their shoulders. While many already hail him as the likely next President of the Republic by 2029, the fervor occasionally turned into chants directed against President Diomaye Faye, highlighting the growing rift at the highest levels of government.

The ongoing outreach tour is expanding to other strongholds in the Dakar suburbs, as well as the city of Thiès. Further details on the significance of this mobilization will be shared in due course, as observers closely monitor the movements of the prominent opposition leader.
