Togo’s University of Datcha inaugurates leadership to drive regional growth
The University of Datcha in Togo’s Plateaux region has taken a historic step forward with the appointment of Professor Essohanam Batchana as its inaugural president. This landmark decision, approved during the latest cabinet meeting, marks the beginning of a new era for higher education in the country.
Professor Batchana, a distinguished historian and specialist in political history and international relations, brings extensive academic leadership experience from his previous role as Director of Academic Affairs and Enrollment at the University of Lomé. His deep understanding of institutional management will be crucial in shaping the strategic direction of this emerging university.
Strategic leadership team to build a world-class institution
To ensure a strong foundation, Professor Batchana will be joined by Professor Kperkouma Walla, an expert in botany and plant ecology, who has been named the first vice president. Together, they form a dynamic leadership duo tasked with establishing the university’s administrative, scientific, and educational frameworks.
Addressing education challenges through regional development
Officially established in September 2023, the University of Datcha was conceived to tackle two critical issues in Togo’s higher education system:
- Alleviating pressure on existing universities: By expanding access to higher education in the Plateaux region, the university aims to reduce congestion at the primary institutions in Lomé and Kara.
- Strengthening local economic integration: The university’s curriculum will be carefully aligned with the region’s economic, social, and cultural needs, fostering sustainable development.
The new institution is designed to prioritize future-oriented disciplines, including technology, applied sciences, and professional training programs.
