Togo parliament gears up for critical reforms in extraordinary session

The second extraordinary session of Togo’s National Assembly has kicked off with high stakes, focusing on business climate, environmental policies, and administrative streamlining. Led by Speaker Prof. Komi Selom Klassou, this urgent parliamentary gathering aims to address pressing socio-economic and institutional challenges facing the nation.

Key reforms targeting economic resilience and social progress

The proposed legislation targets critical domains where transformation is most needed:

• Private sector and investments: A revamp of commercial courts seeks to accelerate dispute resolution while enhancing transparency. By embracing digitalization and aligning with OHADA standards, the reforms aim to create a more predictable legal environment that bolsters investor confidence and protects employment.

• Environment and rural development: New legislation for protected area management will strengthen biodiversity conservation while respecting customary land use practices. This long-awaited framework is set to benefit both local communities and environmental stakeholders.

• Administrative services and diaspora affairs: Accession to the Hague Convention will eliminate bureaucratic hurdles for document legalization (diplomas, contracts, civil status records), easing procedures for citizens, students, and businesses alike.

Nuclear safety takes center stage in international commitments

The Senate has forwarded four international conventions to the National Assembly for second reading under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). These agreements cover nuclear safety, radioactive waste management, rapid accident notification, and emergency radiological assistance.

As parliamentary committees begin deliberations, the Assembly President has called for diligent work to meet public expectations efficiently.
