Adré embraces renewable energy with new solar plant
A groundbreaking solar power plant was officially inaugurated in Adré, Ouaddaï Province, marking a pivotal moment in Tchad’s energy transition. The event, held on August 7, 2026, brought together government officials, local authorities, and community leaders to celebrate a project designed to enhance electricity access and foster economic growth.
Local leaders hail solar project’s transformative impact
The inauguration ceremony was led by the Prefect of Assoungha Department, highlighting the collaborative effort behind the project. Attendees included the Chairman of the Board of the Rural Electrification and Energy Management Agency (ADERM), its Director-General, local representatives, and residents of Adré. Mayor Ahmat Abderrahim praised the initiative as a transformative step for the city’s energy future.
Speaking at the event, Younous Daoussa Mahamat, Director-General of ADERM, emphasized the project’s significance as a fulfillment of national energy policy goals. He noted that the hybrid solar plant, commissioned at the direct request of President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, aligns with broader efforts to ensure universal access to electricity. The facility features 4,800 photovoltaic panels, each with a capacity of 585 watts, totaling 2.808 megawatts of installed power. It also includes a 7.52 megawatt-hour battery storage system, two 500 KVA backup generators, and an extensive 15-kilometer network of medium- and low-voltage power lines to serve the local grid.
Community celebrates new era of reliable electricity
The Prefect of Assoungha, Dillo Bergou, expressed gratitude to the President for prioritizing the region’s development. He commended the collective efforts of all stakeholders involved in bringing the project to fruition. The ceremony concluded with a ribbon-cutting symbolizing the plant’s operational launch, followed by a guided tour of the facility.
Beyond its immediate benefits, the solar plant represents a strategic investment in sustainable energy infrastructure, reinforcing Tchad’s commitment to reducing reliance on fossil fuels and advancing rural electrification.
