In a move driven by reciprocity, Taiwan has announced the suspension of visa applications for Moroccan passport holders. This decision follows reports indicating that Morocco has ceased processing visa applications for Taiwanese travelers worldwide through its diplomatic missions.
According to official statements from Taiwan’s foreign ministry, Morocco’s embassy in Japan recently notified Taiwanese travel agencies that the issuance of visa confirmation letters for Taiwanese nationals would be halted. The directive reportedly extends to all Moroccan embassies and consulates globally, significantly disrupting cross-border mobility and bilateral exchanges.
In retaliation, Taiwan has implemented a visa processing freeze for Moroccan citizens, effective immediately, with exceptions granted only for individuals holding special permits. The Taiwanese government has called on Morocco to reinstate practical travel arrangements and vowed to reassess its stance after closely monitoring visa policies implemented by Rabat.
Morocco does not recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state, adhering instead to the principle of a «single China» and maintaining formal diplomatic ties exclusively with the People’s Republic of China. Consequently, Rabat and Taipei lack official diplomatic relations.
