The question of the upcoming local elections in Senegal took center stage during Ousmane Sonko’s investiture rally this past Sunday at the Dakar Arena, where he delivered a firm message to President Diomaye Faye regarding potential delays to the vote.
Addressing a packed hall of PASTEF members and top officials, Sonko left no room for doubt about his party’s stance on the matter. PASTEF will not endorse any move to postpone the local elections, he declared to roaring applause from the crowd. « We are fully prepared, and we will not agree to any postponement, » he emphasized.
Sonko went further, insisting that any attempt to delay the elections must strictly follow the legal frameworks outlined in Senegalese law. « A postponement cannot occur without approval from the National Assembly, » he pointed out, urging decision-makers to take the necessary steps to hold the elections on schedule.
The opposition leader also pushed back against speculation surrounding the election timeline. « The president should sign the decree—delaying tactics will not resolve anything, » he stated, signaling his impatience with bureaucratic delays.
