Each year, millions of devotees journey to Touba for the Grand Magal. Yet this year, rising transportation costs are adding unexpected strain to their spiritual pilgrimage.
At the Baux Maraîchers station in Pikine, the usual hustle of travelers preparing for the journey to Touba has taken on a different tone this year. Where a standard ticket typically costs between 3,000 and 5,000 francs CFA, today’s prices have surged to 8,000 or even 10,000 francs, depending on the level of comfort.
Why prices are climbing
Fallou, a seasoned travel agent at the station, explains the situation with a practical approach: “All these vehicles are heading to Touba. You can choose between a smaller, non-air-conditioned bus for 10,000 francs or a larger, air-conditioned one for 8,000 francs. It’s up to you. These are today’s prices—traffic on the road to Touba is terrible.”
The reasons behind the price hike are clear. High demand during the Grand Magal means drivers face long delays, especially when returning empty after dropping off passengers. Bour Guewel, a veteran driver with nearly 30 years of experience, shares his perspective: “When we leave Dakar, we’re full of passengers, but returning to the city is another story—especially after filling up with fuel twice. We have no choice but to raise prices to cover our losses.”
The human cost of travel
Not everyone welcomes these inflated costs. Mamadou, a regular traveler to Touba, voices his frustration: “They always take advantage of big events to hike prices. Touba isn’t far, and normally we pay much less. Times are hard—they shouldn’t push it. But I have no choice. My family is waiting for me there, and we need to welcome our guests properly.”
Public transport operator Dakar Dem Dikk offers a more affordable option—4,000 francs per ticket. However, the demand far exceeds supply, and their buses have limited space for luggage, creating further challenges for pilgrims traveling with essentials.
The reality of transport in Senegal during peak religious events remains unchanged: travelers accept higher fares as the only way to reach Touba on time, despite the financial burden.
