Senegal’s president bassirou diomaye faye launches new political party ‘kiiraay’

In a significant shift in Senegal’s political arena, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has established his own political entity, “Kiiraay, les patriotes républicains.” This move follows his separation in May from former ally Ousmane Sonko and marks a decisive break from the Pastef party.

The new party, whose name “Kiiraay” translates to “protection” in Wolof, was officially launched on Saturday. President Faye has clearly outlined its objectives: to contest the upcoming local and legislative elections, paving the way for the 2029 presidential election.

This development prompts several key questions regarding the future of Senegalese politics. What impact will this new party have on the nation’s political trajectory? Does President Bassirou Diomaye Faye maintain strong popular legitimacy following this independent venture? Furthermore, how will this reshape the broader political landscape across Senegal?
