Senegal is currently navigating a period of significant political and societal upheaval. On Friday, May 22, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye announced a major cabinet change, dismissing his Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, who had been a close ally and companion in their political struggle. Just four days later, on May 26, Sonko was elected to the influential position of Speaker of the National Assembly. In parallel with these political developments, the nation also enacted new legislation in March 2026, which substantially stiffens the penalties for homosexuality, marking a notable shift in social policy.
