Senegal’s political dance: the diomaye faye and ousmane sonko dynamic

Reminiscent of Serge Gainsbourg’s famous duet, the political relationship between President Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko in Senegal often appears to echo the sentiment of “I like you, me neither.”

In the aftermath of a somewhat subdued presidential coalition gathering, meticulously orchestrated by Sokhna Aminata Touré Mimi with assistance from figures like Abdourakhmane Diouf, Me Abdoulaye Tine, and Serigne Guèye Diop, certain images reveal the intricate nature of Senegalese political maneuvering.

This nation, at times, presents itself as a grand political spectacle.

Three primary theories emerge to shed light on this dynamic:

  1. A genuine ideological divergence exists between the two key executive figures. Yet, they possess the political acumen to manage these differences, preserving appearances and, by extension, the stability of the Republic. Each acknowledges their indispensable reliance on the other within the current delicate socio-economic climate.

2. President Diomaye Faye strategically established this political platform to rebalance the power dynamics between himself and his perceived mentor. As President, he needs to assert his authority, particularly amidst pressure from influential individuals surrounding him. However, due to the absence of a robust personal political structure, President Diomaye hesitates to escalate this battle of egos. This hesitation potentially explains his unexpected absence from the Mbour meeting at Caroline Faye Stadium this past Saturday.

  1. Both Leaders might be deploying a calculated strategy to contain the opposition and control public discourse. This involves fabricating a perceived crisis to unmask their true adversaries, allowing them to be neutralized at the opportune moment. Within this analytical framework, the aim is to completely isolate an opposition already relegated to an unfulfilling role as occasional, opportunistic supporters of President Diomaye Faye.

Senegal, a truly enigmatic nation.
