Senegal’s new prime minister: economist Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô takes the helm

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye officially appointed Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as the nation’s new Prime Minister on Monday, May 25, 2026. The announcement, confirming the economist’s elevation to the head of government, was made through a presidential decree read live on public television.
Mr. Lô brings a wealth of experience, having previously served as a distinguished official at the Central Bank of West African States (Bceao). Before his latest appointment, he held the position of Secretary-General within President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s inaugural government, which commenced its term in April 2014. Subsequently, he transitioned into a ministerial role.
This significant leadership change in Senegal comes just four days after the dismissal of Ousmane Sonko from the Prime Ministerial post. Sonko’s departure followed several months of escalating tensions between the two principal executive figures in this prominent West African nation.
