While many were enjoying their annual recess, Senegal’s deputies are now preparing to reconvene at the Hémicycle on Place Soweto. Following a crucial session yesterday, the National Assembly Bureau confirmed the opening of its very first extraordinary session of the 2025-2026 legislative calendar. Unless there are last-minute alterations, proceedings are scheduled to commence at precisely 10:00 AM this Monday, August 10, 2026.
Regulatory framework for the extraordinary session
This urgent convocation, driven by current political developments and the necessity for institutional reforms, promises to be particularly demanding. In accordance with the institution’s internal rules, the session’s timetable will be rigorously structured and must not extend beyond the legal limit of fifteen (15) days.
Furthermore, a distinction is made based on how the session is convened: when the National Assembly itself requests the extraordinary session, a Bureau decree establishes the date and agenda. Conversely, if the executive branch initiates the session, a decree from the President of the Republic sets the date and order of business. In this instance, the Assembly initiated the session.
The opening of this first extraordinary session for 2025-2026 will initially focus on verifying the quorum, followed by an official opening declaration from the President of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko. This plenary session will then be succeeded by a meeting of the conference of presidents, tasked with developing the work schedule for the current extraordinary session.

Proposed legislation for review
Among the items, the National Assembly is expected to consider a proposed bill to amend Article 37 of the Constitution of Senegal, which pertains to the President of the Republic’s asset declaration. Another significant piece of legislation is the proposed bill regulating special credits and other secret funds. Both of these legislative proposals were reviewed and declared admissible by the National Assembly Bureau in July 2026.
