Senegal government shake-up: sonko’s concerns over justice minister appointment

Senegal’s political landscape is experiencing fresh turbulence following the unveiling of a new government lineup. At the heart of the controversy is the appointment of Me Moussa Sarr as Minister of Justice—a move that has triggered sharp criticism from Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef party.

The selection of Me Moussa Sarr to lead the Justice Ministry has raised eyebrows within Pastef, with Sonko openly questioning the wisdom of the decision. The party leader expressed deep unease about the new Garde des Sceaux, suggesting that his involvement in past legal disputes could reignite tensions between Pastef and the judiciary.

Sonko stopped short of outright condemnation but made it clear that the appointment does little to ease his party’s concerns. « The choices made for the Justice Ministry do not inspire confidence, » he remarked, hinting at the minister’s prior role in contentious court cases. While he reserved final judgment, he emphasized that Pastef would be closely monitoring the new minister’s actions.

« We harbor doubts, but we will assess the situation, » Sonko stated. « We will take all necessary steps, including within the National Assembly. » His comments underscore the party’s intent to hold the Justice Ministry accountable for its decisions.

Prime minister under scrutiny

Sonko also took aim at Prime Minister Al Amine Lô, calling for him to refrain from political maneuvering. Despite being presented as a technocrat, Al Amine Lô has faced accusations of straying into partisan territory.

« I urge the Prime Minister to remain a technocrat—staying out of politics, » Sonko declared. « Since he was chosen for his technical expertise, he should stick to that role. » The Pastef leader went further, hinting at knowledge of the Prime Minister’s behind-the-scenes activities. « I am aware of many things he is doing. Out of courtesy, I have been restrained so far, but he should not push his luck, » he warned.

Internal party dissent

The criticism did not spare Pastef’s own ranks. Sonko singled out party members who joined the government, including Balla Moussa Fofana, Ibrahima Sy, and Yankoba Diémé. He accused them of accepting positions without consulting the party’s leadership.

« Those who have joined the government did so on their own accord, » he stated. « When the time comes, we will address their cases. » The remarks signal the first major rifts within Pastef since the new administration took office.
