Sénégal and gambia seal final border deal after bullock dispute

The long-standing border dispute between Sénégal and the Gambia has reached a decisive milestone with the signing of a definitive agreement on their shared frontier. Announced by the Permanent Senegalese-Gambian Secretariat, this resolution follows a recent flare-up near Bullock, a flashpoint that reignited tensions between the two West African neighbors.

Tensions escalated on July 16 when Senegalese troops dismantled part of a Gambian military outpost near Bullock. Banjul condemned the move as a “provocative act” violating its sovereignty, while Dakar justified the action by claiming the structure encroached on its territory. The incident underscored the fragility of the border, which has long been a source of contention.

To prevent further escalation, both nations agreed to resume joint demarcation and border densification operations starting August 15. These efforts, previously suspended in June due to logistical challenges, involve installing new boundary markers to clarify the exact frontier line. Authorities aim to complete the process by September, with additional steps to address cross-border agricultural activities that frequently spill into disputed areas.

One critical task during this phase is verifying whether the Gambian military base at Bullock lies within Senegalese territory, as Dakar asserts. The findings will play a key role in resolving the decades-old territorial ambiguity.

Beyond the technicalities of border delineation, this accord reflects a shared commitment to bilateral dialogue as the cornerstone of their relationship. The two countries, bound by deep historical ties, economic interdependence, and vital security cooperation in West Africa, have chosen negotiation over confrontation to safeguard their strategic partnership.
