Sénégal: a new asset declaration law for high officials and its implications

The Senegalese Parliament has successfully passed legislation, championed by the Pastef parliamentary majority, mandating a second asset declaration for the nation’s highest authorities at the conclusion of their term. This new requirement supplements the existing declaration already required at the beginning of their tenure. Significant questions now emerge: Is this new provision applicable to the three high-ranking officials currently in office? This measure was previously part of a constitutional revision proposal, which the Constitutional Council ultimately rejected. Furthermore, the political landscape keenly awaits President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s decision on whether to officially promulgate this critical law.

Les députés ont adopté le 17 août 2026 la double déclaration de patrimoine pour les plus hauts responsables de l'État.

Political expert Moussa Diaw, an emeritus lecturer in political sciences at Gaston Berger University in Saint-Louis, Sénégal, offers insights into this significant legislative development.
