The Nigerian president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, recently suggested that security challenges in Nigeria are exacerbated by instability in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. This assertion has prompted an official response from Burkina Faso’s military leadership.
In a diplomatic exchange, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, met with Nigeria’s chargé d’affaires in Ouagadougou. The encounter also included representatives from Mali and Niger, reflecting a unified stance among the three member states of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
Diplomatic tensions over regional security perceptions
On July 30, during a meeting with Nigerian traditional leaders, President Tinubu linked Nigeria’s security struggles to instability in neighboring Sahel countries. He claimed that armed groups operating in Nigeria originate from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. This perspective has since been formally disputed by Ouagadougou.
During the discussion, Traoré emphasized that Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have been actively combating armed groups for years. He also highlighted Nigeria’s long-standing fight against Boko Haram while noting that the AES states have refrained from publicly attributing any responsibility to Abuja for the Sahel’s security challenges, despite documented ties between regional jihadist factions. He argued that the military operations in these three countries play a crucial role in safeguarding West Africa by curbing the influence of terrorist organizations.
Burkina Faso called for greater solidarity and cooperation among West African nations facing similar threats. The country stressed that collaboration remains vital in the fight against regional terrorism. Following the meeting, Nigeria’s chargé d’affaires acknowledged Burkina Faso’s concerns and committed to relaying the message to authorities in Abuja, according to Traoré’s ministry.
