Psg targets diogo costa for 60m€, eyeing pre-world cup transfer

Despite his strong performances in the PSG net since stepping in for Lucas Chevalier, Matvey Safonov’s position as the permanent starting goalkeeper for next season remains uncertain. This is because Luis Campos is reportedly working diligently to secure the transfer of FC Porto’s acclaimed shot-stopper, Diogo Costa.

Following PSG’s triumph in securing the French championship title after their victory against RC Lens, Luis Campos had previously indicated a pause in transfer discussions, stating, « For us, regarding the transfer market, and this is a decision we made with our coach and president, our transfer activity has been completely halted for several weeks. » The primary focus, naturally, was on the upcoming Champions League final scheduled for May 30 against Arsenal. However, this apparent halt has not prevented the Parisian club from formulating precise plans for the summer transfer window.

PSG’s pursuit of Diogo Costa

Our observations suggest that PSG is actively pursuing Diogo Costa, the highly-rated goalkeeper from FC Porto, who recently celebrated winning the Portuguese championship. This signals that the Parisian management may not intend to fully commit to Matvey Safonov, despite his faultless displays since becoming the first-choice keeper for PSG. Furthermore, it suggests no plans to re-integrate Lucas Chevalier, who was acquired for 40M€ (excluding bonuses) last summer. Diogo Costa extended his contract last December until 2030, but notably, his release clause was adjusted downwards. It now stands at 60M€.

A transfer deal before the World Cup?

This contract adjustment could very well be interpreted as a precursor to an imminent departure. It is understood that PSG has intensified negotiations in this matter, with a firm ambition to finalize Diogo Costa‘s transfer before the World Cup commences on June 11. The strategy appears to be resolving the crucial goalkeeper situation as swiftly as possible. It is also worth noting that Diogo Costa‘s agent is none other than Jorge Mendes, who shares a well-established professional relationship with Luis Campos. This connection could significantly smooth discussions for the transfer of the goalkeeper, who is expected to be Portugal’s starting custodian this summer.
