Unanimous support for a seasoned leader
In a session marked by broad consensus, Patrice Talon, aged 68, secured the Senate presidency with 24 votes in favor, zero against, and a single abstention. His election reflects confidence in his leadership, following his two-term presidency from 2016 to 2026. The Senate’s executive bureau, including key positions, was also elected for a five-year mandate spanning 2026 to 2031.
Assembly of the Senate’s leadership
The newly formed Senate has appointed prominent figures to guide its operations. Louis Vlavonou, a former Assembly president, now serves as Vice President. Alassane Seidou, previously the Interior Minister, has been named Rapporteur, while Adidjatou Mathys assumes the role of Deputy Rapporteur. The Senate’s creation stems from a constitutional amendment enacted on December 17, 2025, transitioning Bénin’s Parliament from a single-chamber to a two-chamber system.
