Ousmane Sonko warns he can bring down Mali’s government

Political tensions in Mali have escalated as opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, head of the Pastef party, issued a bold challenge to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s administration. Speaking to reporters, Sonko declared that his party’s stronghold in the National Assembly gives him the institutional power to dissolve the government at any moment.

« We hold the majority in the National Assembly, and I can bring down this government tomorrow, » he stated firmly, underlining the high-stakes showdown between former allies. His remarks suggest that Pastef could repeatedly leverage this parliamentary advantage if necessary, signaling a deepening political standoff.

Balancing confrontation and national stability

Despite his assertive stance, Sonko emphasized that his primary goal is not to plunge Mali into institutional chaos. « We are not seeking to paralyze the country, » he reassured, while reaffirming Pastef’s commitment to its political agenda beyond the 2029 presidential elections. His party, he argued, remains focused on long-term stability and the implementation of its vision for Mali.

While Sonko distanced himself from the idea of using the National Assembly as a tool for constant confrontation, he accused the presidential camp of initiating hostilities through legal maneuvers, including submissions to the Constitutional Court. « The president’s team has already taken the first institutional strike, » he noted.

Why Pastef’s independent strategy matters

Sonko defended his decision to run Pastef as an autonomous force in the recent legislative elections rather than joining a broader electoral coalition. This strategic choice, he claimed, has preserved the party’s political independence and strengthened its influence within the parliamentary majority. « Our freedom of action and leverage remain intact, » he asserted.

In a defiant tone, Sonko accused unnamed forces of targeting him politically, but he expressed confidence that these efforts would ultimately fail. « They will not succeed in weakening me, » he declared, signaling his resolve to continue challenging the government’s policies and decisions.
