Ousmane sonko unveils urgent flood prevention plan for Senegal

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has issued a clear mandate to relevant ministries, urging them to implement comprehensive strategies to mitigate potential flooding ahead of the imminent rainy season.

During Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, the head of government delivered unequivocal instructions aimed at enhancing the nation’s preparedness for the risks associated with the annual ‘hivernage’. Government spokesperson Marie Rose Faye confirmed that a series of critical, immediate actions are now required.

Sonko further stressed the importance of strategically deploying intervention resources and mandated an inter-ministerial simulation exercise, scheduled before June 15, 2026. This crucial drill will rigorously assess the responsiveness of state services in the face of potential natural disasters.

The Cabinet’s official communiqué highlighted several preparatory initiatives already in progress. These include the comprehensive clearing of water drainage networks, thorough inspections of existing hydraulic structures, the strategic deployment of pumping equipment, and the development of tailored emergency plans for vulnerable areas.

Recognizing the multi-faceted nature of flood mitigation, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko urged all state departments to foster seamless collaboration. This collective effort will operate under the primary coordination of the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation, with robust support from the Ministry of Interior in matters concerning civil protection and crisis management.
