The prospect of dissolving Senegal’s National Assembly continues to be a central theme in the nation’s political discourse. During a Pastef rally held this Saturday in Linguère, Ousmane Sonko, the party leader, unequivocally stated his position on such a scenario, simultaneously issuing a direct caution to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
Sonko firmly asserts that dissolving the National Assembly and subsequently holding early legislative elections would prove detrimental to the ruling power. He expressed confidence that his political movement would emerge as the overwhelming victor in any such electoral contest.
“If they organize local elections, we will defeat them. If they dissolve the Assembly, it will be even worse for them. And that, in fact, is what we prefer. Because we will utterly crush them,” he proclaimed to his supporters.
Ousmane Sonko went further, speculating on the potential political weakening of the head of state should his party suffer an electoral defeat.
“After that, I even fear he might throw in the towel before 2029,” he added, hinting at a possible early resignation.
Sonko urges calm among his militants
Beyond the electoral outlook, the Pastef president also called upon his party members to exercise caution and restraint. He implored them to resist any potential provocations.
Ousmane Sonko believes that certain actors are attempting to incite reactions from Pastef militants to justify imposing measures against the party.
“I call on people to be vigilant and calm. Because they are trying to provoke Pastef so that young people react, allowing them to dissolve the party and revoke its official recognition,” he asserted.
The Pastef leader emphasized that if his militants successfully avoid provocations and maintain their mobilization, upcoming elections could significantly favor his camp, which he characterized as a “mere stroll to victory.”
