Ousmane Diagne appointed president of Senegal’s constitutional council

Key appointment reshapes Senegal’s constitutional landscape

The presidency has confirmed the appointment of Ousmane Diagne as the new president of Senegal’s Constitutional Council, replacing the late Mamadou Badio Camara. The announcement, made through a presidential decree, marks a significant shift in the country’s highest judicial body.

From justice minister to constitutional guardian

Ousmane Diagne, a seasoned jurist with decades of experience, previously served as Minister of Justice (Garde des Sceaux) in the first government of Ousmane Sonko under President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. His removal from the executive team during subsequent reshuffles did not deter his rise in the judiciary. Now, he returns to a leading role, bringing extensive expertise in high-stakes legal matters.

Before his ministerial appointment, Diagne held key positions including Prosecutor General near the Dakar Court of Appeal and First General Attorney near the Supreme Court. His deep understanding of Senegal’s legal system positions him well to lead the Constitutional Council, especially amid ongoing constitutional and electoral disputes.

A court at the heart of Senegal’s democratic debates

The Constitutional Council plays a pivotal role in resolving institutional and electoral conflicts. Recent years have seen it adjudicate major cases, including disputes over constitutional reforms. With Diagne at the helm, the council is expected to continue shaping Senegal’s legal and political trajectory with authority and impartiality.

The decree formalizing his appointment, numbered 2026-1318, underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening judicial independence and continuity in governance.
