Niger President’s Coalition Denounces Ousmane Sonko’s Comments

The coalition Diomaye Président has strongly reacted to the recent comments made by Ousmane Sonko, who was inaugurated as a member of Pastef at Mbacké. The coalition’s representatives have condemned the remarks they consider to be insulting towards the head of state and claim that they break with the spirit of responsibility expected from an institutional leader.

According to Bassirou Dieng, a member of the coalition, such statements are incompatible with the principles of a state of law. ‘In a state of law, a democracy that respects itself or a Republic, it’s not acceptable for a president of the National Assembly to make such insulting remarks towards the head of state,’ he said during an iRadio interview.

Dieng stated that Sonko’s statements have sparked numerous reactions on social media and in the press. ‘Since his speech at Mbacké yesterday, everyone is getting upset all over social media and in the press. Nobody agrees with his comments. Everyone denounces these scandalous remarks from Ousmane Sonko,’ he added, calling on the latter to ‘have a sense of responsibility.

Dieng also warned that the coalition president will now react more firmly to what they consider as repeated attacks against institutions. ‘The Diomaye Président coalition will not tolerate this. It will no longer be acceptable to close one’s eyes to certain insulting remarks from Ousmane Sonko towards the President of the Republic, and also towards certain authorities who represent the State,’ he said.

This reaction comes after Sonko’s media outing at Mbacké, where his statements fueled the political debate and sparked heated reactions within the majority presidential camp.
