Mustapha ngouana exposes Cameroon’s governance failures amid broken promises

Mustapha Ngouana: Cameroon’s chronic cycle of unfulfilled promises

Cameroon has become accustomed to a pattern of broken promises and unmet commitments, according to prominent commentator Mustapha Ngouana. Speaking on the television program Droit de Réponse, he highlighted what he describes as a systematic failure in governance that has left the nation stagnant.

Repetitive failures in presidential commitments

Ngouana pointed to multiple instances where the government’s stated intentions failed to materialize. «The President has repeatedly made decisions with deadlines that were never met,» he stated. He cited the delayed hosting of the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) as a prime example, despite official assurances it would proceed as scheduled. Another case in point was the postponement of the 50th anniversary of reunification celebrations, initially planned for 2011 but only held in 2014.

The discussion centered around the theme «Broken Trust: Public Opinion Confronts Unfulfilled Promises», a topic Ngouana approached by dissecting what he termed «permanent missteps» in the administration’s leadership.

From poor governance to non-governance

«When people speak of poor governance, they may be using a polite term,» Ngouana argued. «What we’re actually witnessing is a complete absence of governance. Cameroon is operating on autopilot.» His assessment suggests a systemic failure where institutions and processes exist in name only, failing to deliver on their intended functions.

The commentary reflects growing public frustration with what many perceive as a leadership unable or unwilling to address the nation’s challenges. Ngouana’s remarks underscore a broader sentiment of disillusionment regarding the country’s political trajectory and the erosion of public trust in state institutions.
