Morocco’s Military Leadership Strengthens Ties with Mauritania

General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces and Commander of the Southern Zone, concluded a high-level working visit to Mauritania this week. The visit underscored the deepening strategic partnership between the two nations, particularly in defense and military cooperation.

On Tuesday, General Berrid was received by Mauritania’s President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani in Nouakchott. The meeting took place in the presence of Morocco’s Ambassador to Mauritania, Hamid Chabar, as confirmed by an official statement from Morocco’s General Staff.

Later the same day, the Moroccan military delegation visited the Ministry of Defense, where Minister Hanana Ould Sidi presented General Berrid with the Commander grade of the National Order of Merit on behalf of Mauritania’s President. This honor highlights the strong bilateral relations and mutual recognition of efforts in strengthening regional stability.

Advancing Joint Military Initiatives

Following the official engagements, General Berrid and Mauritania’s Chief of Defense Staff co-chaired the sixth session of the Joint Military Commission. During the discussions, both sides reviewed progress on existing military cooperation programs and explored new avenues for collaboration.

Senior military officials from both countries expressed strong satisfaction with the outcomes of their partnership, noting significant achievements in joint exercises, intelligence sharing, and capacity-building initiatives. The bilateral military cooperation was hailed as a model of effective strategic partnership in the region.

The visit reflects Morocco and Mauritania’s commitment to deepening defense ties and addressing shared security challenges in West Africa.
