Morocco names highway after donald trump in western Sahara

The kingdom of Morocco has taken a historic step by naming a newly inaugurated highway after former US President Donald Trump, recognizing his pivotal role in supporting the country’s sovereignty claims over the Western Sahara.

In a landmark announcement, King Mohammed VI revealed that the Tiznit-Dakhla expressway, spanning 1,055 kilometers, has been officially designated as the “Donald J. Trump Highway”. This monumental infrastructure project, now the longest road network in Africa, connects southern Morocco to the contested Western Sahara territory.

Honoring a gesture of solidarity

In a formal letter addressed to President Trump on July 2, King Mohammed VI expressed his deep gratitude for the former US leader’s 2020 decision to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. The monarch emphasized that this gesture “will forever remain etched in the memory of the Moroccan people.”

The royal letter underscored the significance of Trump’s move, stating it as a historic act of support that strengthened Morocco’s position in the region. The king also highlighted the role of this infrastructure in fostering economic and social development across the vast desert landscape.

Reactions from Washington

President Trump, who has been active on the social media platform Truth Social, responded with enthusiasm to the news. In a post dated July 26, he thanked King Mohammed VI, calling the honor “an immense privilege” and expressing his eagerness to one day travel the full length of the highway. The White House has yet to issue an official statement on the naming.

A symbol of infrastructure and diplomacy

The Tiznit-Dakhla highway, stretching across the Saharan desert, is not only a marvel of modern engineering but also a testament to Morocco’s strategic vision. The road serves as a vital link between coastal cities and inland regions, boosting trade, tourism, and connectivity.

The decision to name the highway after President Trump reflects a broader trend of diplomatic recognition, where infrastructure and international relations intersect. As Morocco continues to assert its claims over Western Sahara, this move sends a clear message of appreciation for allies who have stood by its side.

The highway’s inauguration marks a new chapter in Morocco’s development, blending national pride with global partnerships.
