Moroccan authorities have taken decisive action to prevent any illegal border crossing attempts toward the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. This comes after recent online posts and anonymous messages began circulating, calling for a mass crossing scheduled for August 15th. The announcement was made by Rachid El Khalfi, spokesperson for Morocco’s Interior Ministry, during a press briefing in Rabat.
El Khalfi confirmed that security forces have already detained several individuals suspected of inciting these illegal activities. Those arrested are currently undergoing judicial investigation under the supervision of the competent prosecutor’s office. The Interior Ministry emphasized that such calls pose « serious risks to public safety » and constitute criminal offenses under Moroccan law. Both participants and organizers of these online campaigns will face legal consequences.
Ongoing and indefinite border surveillance
The Interior Ministry stressed that security operations, coordinated by the General Directorate for National Security (DGSN), are not limited to a specific timeframe but represent a permanent and continuous surveillance system, particularly in areas near the Ceuta and Melilla border crossings. This security framework is constantly reinforced and adapted based on evolving threats and field conditions.
Moroccan authorities have called on the public to remain vigilant and avoid falling for misleading or suspicious instructions that endanger lives. They reiterated that combating irregular migration is conducted strictly in accordance with the law.
Call for Spain to accelerate minor repatriations
The official statement underscored that addressing irregular migration and human trafficking requires a « shared responsibility » approach, one that cannot be the sole responsibility of one party.
In this context, Morocco’s Interior Ministry formally requested Spanish authorities to accelerate the repatriation of unaccompanied minors currently in Ceuta to reunite them with their families in Morocco. The ministry urged Madrid to overcome administrative and judicial obstacles delaying these returns, always prioritizing the best interests of the minors.
Rabat also reaffirmed the importance of the « immediate repatriation » mechanism, highlighting its proven effectiveness in previous border operations.
Finally, Morocco’s Interior Ministry assured that authorities will continue to act firmly and responsibly to maintain public order and safety, ensuring the highest level of preparedness and coordination while fully complying with legal provisions.
