Mali’s military reports decisive progress in countering armed factions
The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared a significant shift in momentum, asserting full control over previously contested zones where operations were conducted by the National Movement for the Liberation of the Azawad (MNLA) in the north and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, in central and southern regions.
A detailed statement released by the military highlighted sustained clashes on Sunday near Anifif, located about 110 kilometers southeast of Kidal. The confrontations followed the arrival of reinforcements sent to bolster the MNLA’s position in the area.
The FAMA emphasized the resolve of its troops, stating, “In response to these coordinated pressures, Malian defense units engaged proactively throughout the day, demonstrating unwavering discipline and resilience under fire.”
The communiqué underscored the army’s unshaken confidence in its ability to safeguard national sovereignty, protect civilians, and dismantle enemy forces operating within Mali’s borders.
Meanwhile, the MNLA’s spokesperson, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had earlier claimed control over Anifif following the resumption of hostilities. In a separate statement, he refuted rumors of the death of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, asserting that the commander remained actively involved in directing battlefield operations in northern Mali.
