Mali overhauls military command after april security challenges

Mali has initiated a comprehensive restructuring of its military leadership following the coordinated assaults on April 25, 2026. These attacks, claimed by both the JNIM and the Front de libération de l’Azawad (FLA), tragically resulted in the death of former Defense Minister, General Sadio Camara.

As detailed in a special edition of the Official Journal released on May 29, several high-ranking officers have been appointed to critical roles within the Malian Armed Forces and the unified force of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

Brigadier General Makan Alassane Diarra now assumes command of the AES Unified Force. Formerly the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, General Diarra succeeds General Daouda Traoré. His extensive experience in military operations across the eastern part of the country was a decisive factor in this strategic appointment.

To fill the vacancy at the General Staff of the Armies, authorities have designated Brigadier General Mamadou Massaoulé Samaké, who previously served as a strategy advisor. Concurrently, Colonel-Major Yacouba Sanogo has been assigned the pivotal position of strategic advisor to the General Staff.

This organizational overhaul extends to operational theaters across the nation. Colonel-Major Karim Traoré has been named commander of the Eastern Theater, Colonel-Major Didier Dembélé takes charge of the Southern Theater, and Colonel Issa Bagayoko is now responsible for the Central Theater.

These significant appointments are part of a series of decisive actions taken in the aftermath of the April incidents. The President of the Transition, General Assimi Goïta, has personally re-assumed the Defense portfolio, while General Oumar Diarra has been appointed Minister Delegate for this vital sector.

Through this extensive reshuffle, Bamako aims to enhance its responsiveness to an escalating security threat and to improve operational coordination between national efforts and those conducted under the AES framework, reinforcing Mali’s defense capabilities.
