The Malian Armed Forces announced the neutralization of a key jihadist commander linked to the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) in a recent drone strike.

The Malian military confirmed that the operation took place on June 3 near Mougnan, approximately 40 kilometers from Djenné in central Mali. The targeted individual, identified by aliases such as Oumar Kéréna, Farouk, and Housseini Mawdo, was a prominent figure within the JNIM coalition, which maintains close ties to Al-Qaeda.

From regional militant to Sahel jihadist coordinator

Military sources describe the neutralized commander as a former member of the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO). Over time, he rose through the ranks to become a critical organizer of armed activities across several regions, including Sikasso, Koutiala, and parts of neighboring Burkina Faso. His operational focus had previously centered on the Serma area before expanding to broader zones.

According to the army, he played a pivotal role in unifying and directing affiliated cells under the JNIM umbrella, consolidating the group’s influence in the Sahel.

Government intensifies security measures with unprecedented incentives

This military success follows a bold decision by Malian authorities to introduce a sweeping rewards system on June 4. The initiative offers financial bounties reaching up to two billion West African CFA francs for credible information leading to the capture or elimination of high-profile armed group leaders operating in the region.

The most substantial reward targets Iyad Ag Ghali, widely regarded as Mali’s most-wanted fugitive. This unprecedented move reflects Bamako’s intensified commitment to dismantling terrorist networks amid escalating armed violence and persistent insecurity across the country and the wider Sahel.
