Authorities have now revealed details of what they describe as a meticulously planned assassination attempt targeting the transitional president, Assimi Goïta.
The Malian Armed Forces held a press briefing to expose the operation, revealing that multiple suicide vehicles were deployed during the attack. Commander Djibrila Maiga, Deputy Director of Public Relations for the military, stated that one of the vehicles was specifically aimed at the presidential residence. This carefully orchestrated plot was designed to eliminate our leaders, he declared.
In response to the coverage of these events, Burkina Faso has taken action against TV5monde, suspending its broadcasts indefinitely. The Supreme Council for Communication justified the move by accusing the channel of glorifying terrorism and undermining Mali’s state institutions.
Reactions in Ouagadougou have been mixed. Some residents defend the ban, arguing that broadcasters promoting terrorism should not be allowed to operate in the region. We cannot tolerate channels that encourage violence within our borders, said Flore Guigma.
Others criticize the perceived bias in international media coverage of the Sahel, calling it condescending. Serge Théophile Bancé shared his frustration, stating, I no longer watch these channels. Their reporting reflects a troubling arrogance.
Reporters Without Borders has condemned the suspension, warning that such measures further restrict press freedom in the country. Since Captain Ibrahim Traoré assumed power, several international news outlets—including Le Monde, LCI, France 24, RFI, BBC News, and Voice of America—have faced similar restrictions.
