The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared a strategic shift in the ongoing conflict, asserting full control over regions previously targeted by the Azawad Liberation Front in the north and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda-affiliated faction, in central and southern Mali.
Military operations intensify amid renewed clashes
In a formal statement, FAMA confirmed sustained combat operations on Sunday near Anifif, located 110 kilometers southeast of Kidal. The engagement followed the arrival of additional fighters and equipment for the Azawad Liberation Front, prompting a robust response from Malian troops.
The armed forces emphasized their unwavering commitment, stating: “Confronted with these aggressive maneuvers, our units advanced with unshakable resolve, executing operations throughout the day with professionalism and valor.”

FAMA’s communiqué underscored absolute confidence in their capacity to safeguard Mali’s territorial integrity, shield civilians, and dismantle hostile forces. The statement reflects the military’s determination to uphold stability across the nation’s diverse regions.
Azawad Liberation Front denies leadership losses
In a counter-narrative, the Azawad Liberation Front’s spokesperson, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, claimed control over Anifif following the reactivation of hostilities. He categorically refuted reports of the death of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, asserting that Ag Akli remains actively involved in directing military operations in northern Mali.
