Bamako recently hosted a high-level event marking the 27th anniversary of Morocco’s Throne Day, highlighting the deepening economic and diplomatic bonds between the two nations. The gathering served as a platform to review the robust cooperation framework that has flourished under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
Maroc-Mali relations: A partnership rooted in shared progress
During the reception, Moroccan diplomat Driss Isbayène, Ambassador to Mali, underscored the strategic importance of South-South cooperation. He emphasized that the partnership between Morocco and Mali is built on a foundation of mutual respect, solidarity, and tangible projects that directly benefit local communities.
Isbayène noted, “Under the visionary guidance of His Majesty the King, South-South cooperation has become a cornerstone of our foreign policy. The principle is clear: forge partnerships that prioritize shared prosperity and sustainable development for African nations.”
Mali’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty boosts bilateral ties
A key milestone in the relationship was Mali’s historic decision to withdraw its recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (RASD) in April, a move that has further solidified the alliance. This diplomatic shift was followed by the convening of the Mali-Maroc Joint High Commission last week, signaling a new chapter in bilateral engagement.
Isbayène added, “The year 2026 will be remembered as a pivotal moment in our shared history. The withdrawal of Mali’s recognition of the RASD has unlocked unprecedented opportunities for collaboration, fostering trust and mutual growth.”
Voices from Bamako: Celebrating a legacy of cooperation
Former Malian minister Thierno Amadou Omar Hass Diallo reflected on Morocco’s rising influence across Africa, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. He highlighted the country’s strategic port projects, such as the Dakhla Atlantic Gateway, which are poised to enhance regional connectivity for Mali and other nations within the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
Diallo remarked, “When one observes Morocco’s dynamic trajectory today, it’s evident how its partnerships in Africa—especially with Mali—are setting a new standard for regional integration and economic resilience.”
Another attendee, Abou Djitteye, a former resident of Morocco trained in the Kingdom’s institutions, expressed pride in the flourishing relations between the two countries. He extended his well-wishes to the Moroccan monarchy, stating, “It’s an honor to witness the strength of this bond and to see how our shared future is being shaped with such promise.”
Mali’s foreign minister praises Morocco’s regional support
Abdoulaye Diop, Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, used the occasion to commend Morocco’s steadfast support not only to Mali but also to the AES member states. He emphasized the importance of collective efforts in advancing peace, security, and development across the Sahel.
Diop concluded, “The Malian government expresses its highest appreciation for Morocco’s unwavering commitment. We also salute the Royal Atlantic Initiative, which aims to provide landlocked Sahel nations with direct access to the Atlantic Ocean—a transformative project for our region.”
