Lucas Digne returns to PSG after decade away

A decade after his departure, Lucas Digne is set for a remarkable return to Paris Saint-Germain, reuniting with former teammates and the club he once called home. The announcement, though unexpected, marks the beginning of a new chapter for the French defender, who will join the capital’s side after activating a €10 million release clause following the World Cup.

Lucas Digne in action

Having spent the past season at Aston Villa, Digne will now return to PSG, where he will serve as a backup to Nuno Mendes. His arrival adds depth to a squad already brimming with defensive talent, while also reuniting him with players he has shared the pitch with in the past, including Ousmane Dembélé, with whom he has maintained a close bond.

PSG squad reacts to Digne’s arrival

The news of Digne’s impending move spread quickly among his new teammates, many of whom were already aware of his decision. While playing in the World Cup with several French internationals, Digne took the opportunity to share the news personally with Lucas Hernandez, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Désiré Doué, Bradley Barcola, and Dembélé. The group, including the reigning Ballon d’Or winner, exchanged playful banter over the revelation, highlighting the camaraderie within the squad.

Behind the scenes of a discreet transfer move

The negotiations that led to Digne’s return were conducted with the utmost discretion, keeping even PSG’s own players in the dark until the last moment. Luis Campos, the club’s sporting director, spearheaded the talks over the past month, ultimately deciding to prioritize experience over youth. Initially, PSG had explored other options, but Digne’s proven track record and familiarity with the club’s environment made him the ideal candidate to support Mendes in defense.
