Historic re-election at Treichville Cultural Palace

Delegates of the PPA-CI gathered at the Treichville Cultural Palace in Abidjan for the party’s first ordinary congress since its establishment in 2020, following Laurent Gbagbo’s acquittal at the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges related to the 2010-2011 postelection violence.

With nearly 3,000 party members in attendance, the former Ivorian president faced no serious opposition in his bid for re-election. His leadership was endorsed overwhelmingly, demonstrating the party’s continued confidence in his political vision.

From planned retirement to renewed mandate

In 2025, Laurent Gbagbo had publicly expressed his intention to step back from active party leadership while remaining engaged in national politics. However, persistent calls from party members and supporters convinced him to continue at the helm of the PPA-CI, citing the need for stability during a critical period for the party.

Strategic vision for the future

The congress served as a platform to outline the party’s future direction, with a strong emphasis on internal reorganization and grassroots revitalization. Party officials emphasized that this new term would mark a gradual transition toward empowering a new generation of leaders while maintaining Gbagbo’s strategic guidance.
