A deadly assault by the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) has targeted a joint convoy of the Russian African Corps and Malian state forces, underscoring the volatile security situation in the region.
The violent confrontation unfolded near the settlement of Kaka, situated in the Mopti province. During this targeted strike, at least 13 personnel from the Malian military and Russian security detachments lost their lives.
Following the raid, insurgent forces claimed to have confiscated a significant cache of military hardware. The seized items reportedly include 14 motorbikes, a pair of PKM machine guns, six Kalashnikov rifles, six hand grenades, and a substantial stock of live rounds.
This development marks a critical turn in Mali current affairs, following a previous large-scale ambush in northern Mali, where insurgent groups intercepted a heavily armed military column. That particular convoy transported state troops alongside operatives from the Russian Ministry of Defense’s African Corps division.
Initial assessments from that earlier engagement indicated the convoy comprised more than 200 Russian paramilitary fighters and approximately 100 Malian troops. The devastating assault resulted in the deaths of roughly 60 Malian soldiers, with dozens more wounded and at least 30 taken hostage.
Despite the high frequency of these coordinated ambushes on defense transport lines, neither Bamako nor Moscow has implemented an effective strategy to counter the persistent threat. Such events remain a major focus of West Africa Mali news and regional security assessments.
The rising influence of JNIM in the Sahel
Operating as the primary Al-Qaeda affiliate in the Sahel zone, JNIM represents one of the most formidable extremist coalitions in the territory. The alliance was officially established in early 2017 through the consolidation of several prominent local factions, including Ansar Dine, Al-Mourabitoun, the Sahara Emirate Katiba, and Katiba Macina.
While Mali serves as the operational core for the group, its fighters have steadily pushed past domestic borders. The coalition’s combatants regularly execute operations in Burkina Faso and Niger, while systematically embedding themselves further south in nations like Bénin and Togo, highlighting a dangerous expansion from the central Sahel toward the broader West African coast.
