Japan’s decade-long partnership fuels Cameroon’s development
The Japanese government has channelled over $646 million into Cameroon’s economy since the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) established operations in the country in 2006. The announcement came during a high-level meeting in Yaoundé between Cameroon’s Minister of Economy, Planning and Territorial Development, Alamine Ousmane Mey, and JICA Vice President Ando Naoki, marking two decades of Japanese cooperation in the country.
Beyond loans: A multi-faceted development approach
This substantial financial injection is not solely composed of loans. Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) strategy combines grants, concessional loans, and technical cooperation to drive sustainable growth. Grants have primarily funded social infrastructure projects, including schools, classrooms, health centres, and community facilities. Meanwhile, low-interest loans with extended repayment terms have supported large-scale infrastructure developments, while technical assistance has focused on knowledge transfer and capacity building.
Key sectors benefiting from Japanese support
The funding has been strategically allocated to critical sectors such as transport, energy, agriculture, and human capital development. Under the grants programme, over 120 schools and 1,500 classrooms have been constructed nationwide. Concessional loans have financed major transport projects, including the Mintom-Lele road, implemented in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB), which enhances connectivity between Yaoundé and Brazzaville.
Japan’s technical cooperation has delivered measurable results, including the training of 36,000 rice farmers to bolster food security, mentoring 1,500 businesses through the Kaizen methodology, and strengthening technical skills across various industries.
Future-focused partnerships for sustainable growth
Looking ahead, discussions between Cameroon’s Ministry of Economy and JICA have highlighted plans to deepen collaboration in high-priority areas such as agriculture, education, energy, climate resilience, and enterprise competitiveness. These priorities align with Cameroon’s 2020-2030 National Development Strategy (SND30), ensuring that Japanese support continues to drive inclusive and sustainable progress.
The evolving partnership also includes innovative initiatives like the Savannah and Forest Landscape Restoration project launched in May 2026. This agroforestry-focused programme demonstrates Japan’s commitment to environmental sustainability while maintaining its long-standing focus on infrastructure and human capital development.
