Ivorian politics: Laurent Gbagbo reshuffles PPA-CI leadership structure

Laurent Gbagbo, president of Côte d’Ivoire’s Parti des Peuples Africains-Côte d’Ivoire (PPA-CI), has implemented a strategic restructuring by appointing five key figures to high-level positions within the party. This announcement, made on August 10, aims to expand shared responsibility while keeping the former head of state at the helm of the organization’s governance.

New leadership appointments strengthen party structure

Following his re-election to the PPA-CI presidency in May 2026, Laurent Gbagbo outlined plans to delegate some responsibilities. While initially considering a single deputy role, the party has now established a five-member leadership team to share strategic duties.

  • Assoa Adou assumes the role of first vice-president, with responsibility for ensuring alignment with the party’s political direction;
  • Hubert Oulaye is appointed second vice-president, overseeing party operations and chairing central committee meetings;
  • Emmanuel Ackah, former ambassador, takes on the third vice-president position, focusing on party mobilization;
  • Justin Katinan Koné retains oversight of the party’s overall political strategy;
  • Sébastien Dano Djédjé leads the newly created Strategic and Political Council, tasked with supervising the party’s activities.

Gbagbo retains central authority in revised structure

The restructuring is presented as a move toward a more collegial leadership model, emphasizing shared responsibilities and unified action. Political analyst Abdourahmane Barry notes that while the new appointments enhance daily management, Gbagbo remains the ultimate decision-maker in the party’s governance.

This reorganization reflects the PPA-CI’s efforts to diversify leadership while maintaining its founder’s influence. Details regarding the coordination mechanisms among the new leaders have not been disclosed.
