Inside Kidal: touareg rebels assert control in northern Mali

A recent coordinated offensive in Mali, spearheaded by the Al-Qaeda-affiliated JNIM terrorist group and the Touareg rebel faction, the Front de Libération de l’Azawad (FLA), significantly overwhelmed the Malian army and its Russian partners from the Africa Corps across various towns in late April. This development marks a critical shift in Mali politics and West Africa Mali news.

Our journalists were on the ground in Kidal, observing FLA members who now hold sway over the city, a strategic location they had lost control of in late 2023. This marks a pivotal moment in Mali current affairs.

The intense fighting forced the entire local population to evacuate Kidal, leaving the Touareg rebels, now aligned with JNIM, to brace for an anticipated counter-offensive from the Malian government. The situation in Kidal remains tense as the region watches for further military action.
