Gabon’s digital leap: MIT selects Libreville for major tech innovation forum

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), one of the world’s most renowned academic institutions, will host an international summit on digital innovation and entrepreneurship in Libreville in the coming months. This landmark decision underscores the strategic vision championed by President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema and implemented by Minister of Digital Economy Mark-Alexandre Doumba.

Gabon is solidifying its position on Africa’s digital landscape. Through its Centre for Prosperity and Entrepreneurship, MIT has confirmed the organization of an international forum at the Libreville Conference Palace, focusing on innovation, entrepreneurship, and digital transformation.

Global recognition for Gabon’s digital transformation

Dina Sheriff, Executive Director of MIT’s Centre, highlights that Gabon now stands among African nations strategically diversifying their economies through digitalization—encompassing public services, payments, and business environments.

This acknowledgment arrives less than two years after President Oligui Nguema assumed office, with a clear mission: leveraging digital technology as a key driver for economic diversification and youth employment.

Minister Mark-Alexandre Doumba drives structural reforms

Under the leadership of the Minister of Digital Economy, Digitalization, and Innovation, Gabon has implemented pivotal reforms, including:

  • A national preference policy for digital market contracts
  • A dedicated start-up legal framework
  • Digital payment regulations
  • Electronic archiving ordinances

The MIT’s announcement is more than an event—it signals Gabon’s ambition to emerge as a leading digital hub in Central Africa, attracting global investors.
