Gabonese president oligui nguema’s state visit to Paris: strengthening France-Gabon ties

French Ambassador Fabrice Mauriès recently declared the impending state visit of Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema to Paris as a pivotal moment in reinforcing the enduring partnership between France and Gabon. Speaking at the French Embassy in Libreville during the Bastille Day commemorations, Ambassador Mauriès underscored the profound significance of this diplomatic engagement, characterizing it as the most esteemed level of official protocol and a crucial juncture in enhancing bilateral relations.

Before a distinguished audience comprising Gabonese officials, the diplomatic community, and French expatriates, Fabrice Mauriès reiterated that “in the coming days, His Excellency the President of the Gabonese Republic, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, will travel to Paris for a state visit, representing the highest possible diplomatic recognition, which will undeniably mark a decisive phase in the evolution of our relationship.”

The ambassador highlighted that this proactive engagement aligns with a continuous series of high-level exchanges initiated in 2023, recalling President Oligui Nguema’s official trip to Paris in the spring of 2024, followed by President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Libreville. “This partnership, whose breadth continues to expand, is in a constant state of redefinition,” he affirmed, suggesting that these high-level encounters are charting a new trajectory for Franco-Gabonese cooperation.

Reaffirming Paris’s perspective on the Gabonese Transition, Philippe Mauriès stated that “France was not a participant, as it is solely up to the Gabonese people to determine their nation’s fundamental choices.” He nevertheless assured that “France has never withdrawn; it remains and will continue to be a trustworthy, loyal, committed, and resolute partner dedicated to assisting the Gabonese in shaping this new collective future.”

The diplomat concluded by announcing that this visit aims to solidify a renewed vision for economic relations between the two countries. “We will forge a mutually beneficial, win-win partnership, a goal fervently expressed by the Gabonese President and confirmed by President Macron as our shared outlook,” he indicated, specifying that “new projects embodying this vision will be unveiled in Paris within the coming days.”

Since the change of regime in August 2023, Gabon and France have embarked on a gradual re-evaluation of their bilateral relations. The reciprocal visits by Presidents Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema and Emmanuel Macron have inaugurated a fresh cycle of political, economic, and security cooperation. The upcoming state visit by the Gabonese head of state to Paris is poised to signify a further milestone in this rapprochement, with the anticipated announcement of several strategic initiatives designed to bolster the partnership between both nations.
