Gabon refines its strategy to position local businesses in the continental market

Gabon is actively advancing its plans to maximize benefits from the African market. On Friday, 11 September 2026, during a technical workshop focused on validating the updated national implementation strategy for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the Minister of Commerce, SMEs-SMIs, and Youth Entrepreneurship held talks with Adama Ekberg Coulibaly, the Resident Representative of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

This meeting highlights the Gabonese government’s determination to increase its share of intra-African commerce and enable local enterprises to fully exploit the vast opportunities presented by the AfCFTA.

Enhancing opportunities for Gabonese entrepreneurs

During the discussions, the ECA representative stressed how crucial it is for Gabon to establish an updated national framework to guide its integration into this massive continental market. This strategic roadmap will help the nation identify its trade priorities and support local economic operators in expanding their reach across Africa.

A key focus of this initiative is supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) along with young entrepreneurs, who form the backbone of the national economy. The revised approach aims to unlock specific mechanisms that facilitate their access to new commercial avenues and integrate them into regional value chains.

Furthermore, the ECA pledged its continued support to help Gabon execute this plan. This partnership will focus on building national capacities, boosting the private sector, and enhancing the overall competitiveness of Gabonese businesses.

For decision-makers in Gabon, the ultimate goal is to convert continental trade integration into tangible domestic advantages, driving business growth, job creation, economic diversification, and the promotion of locally manufactured products.

Approving this updated strategy represents a vital milestone for Gabon as it prepares to navigate continental competition. Through these efforts, the government aims to use the AfCFTA as a powerful driver for structural economic transformation and private sector development.
