The recent visit of Gabon’s President Oligui Nguema to France marked a significant turning point in the two countries’ relations. After 42 years of absence, this high-level visit signified a new chapter in their partnership, with both nations pledging to establish a more equitable and sustainable relationship.
The French President welcomed the Gabonese leader, emphasizing the need for a fresh approach in their cooperation. The two leaders discussed ways to promote economic growth, particularly in the mining sector, where Gabon aims to increase its value-added production and reduce its reliance on foreign companies.
A key outcome of this visit was the signing of an agreement between Eramet, a French mining company, and the Gabonese government. The partnership aims to transform Gabon’s manganese reserves into a major export commodity by 2031, with the French company committing to invest in local capacity-building.
Another significant development is the modernization of the Transgabonais, a critical transportation link between Gabon and its neighboring countries. The agreement with Proparco, a European investment agency, will support the upgrade of this infrastructure, which has been a long-standing priority for both governments.
The French President also reiterated his country’s commitment to maintaining a strong partnership with Gabon, while acknowledging the need for diversification in their economic ties. The two leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation in areas such as defense and security, as well as promote regional integration.
As Oligui Nguema emphasized during his visit, ‘the era of dependence is over.’ This statement reflects Gabon’s determination to assert its sovereignty and take control of its natural resources. The partnership with France represents a significant step towards this goal.
The French President’s words also underscored the need for a paradigm shift in Africa-Europe relations. By embracing new partnerships and investing in regional development, both sides can reap mutual benefits and build a more prosperous future.
