The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, arrived in Libreville on Friday for a landmark working and friendship visit aimed at deepening bilateral ties between Gabon and the DRC.
Warm crowds greeted the Congolese leader upon his descent from the aircraft, creating a vibrant atmosphere as he made his way through the greeting lines. The Gabonese presidency confirmed the visit’s significance, emphasizing its role in strengthening diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two nations.
Tshisekedi’s first stop was the newly renovated Léon Mba Memorial, where he paid solemn tribute to Gabon’s founding father. The ceremony included the laying of a wreath, followed by a review of Léon Mba’s biography and a moment of silence accompanied by the national anthem in remembrance of the fallen. This gesture underscored the broader commitment to honoring Africa’s liberation heroes.
After the memorial visit, the Congolese president signed the guestbook, marking his presence at this historic site. The day’s events set the stage for high-level discussions the following day.
On Saturday, Tshisekedi met with Gabon’s President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema at the presidential palace to discuss key bilateral issues. While the agenda remains undisclosed, the meeting symbolized the ongoing partnership between the two Central African nations.
Both Gabon and the DRC are longstanding members of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), with a history of frequent high-level exchanges between Libreville and Kinshasa.
