France severs ties with Burkina Faso and withdraws all diplomatic staff

France has taken decisive action against Burkina Faso by severing diplomatic relations and withdrawing all its diplomatic personnel from the West African nation. This move follows a series of escalating tensions between the two countries.

The decision comes after Burkina Faso’s military government announced it was breaking off relations with France, a development that has sent shockwaves through the region. The announcement was met with swift retaliation from Paris, which has now ordered all French diplomatic staff to leave Burkina Faso within seven days.

Tensions escalate between Paris and Ouagadougou

Relations between the two nations have been deteriorating since Captain Ibrahim Traoré assumed power in Burkina Faso following a coup in September 2022. The military government in Ouagadougou has increasingly adopted an anti-Western stance, particularly targeting France, accusing it of undermining Burkina Faso’s sovereignty.

In response to these accusations, France has firmly rejected any suggestion that it supports terrorist groups operating in the region. A spokesperson for the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that these claims are “completely unfounded,” emphasizing France’s unwavering commitment to combating terrorism in the Sahel.

France urges heightened vigilance for its citizens

With more than 2,000 French nationals currently living in Burkina Faso and over 6,000 Burkinabé residents in France, the French government has issued a warning to its citizens in the country to exercise extreme caution. The move underscores the gravity of the situation and the potential risks faced by expatriates in the region.

Since 2023, Burkina Faso has taken several steps to distance itself from France, including demanding the departure of the French ambassador, canceling military cooperation agreements, and ending the presence of French forces that were previously engaged in fighting jihadist groups.

The military government has since sought to strengthen ties with alternative partners, including Russia, Turkey, and Iran, signaling a shift in Burkina Faso’s foreign policy alignment.
