Erling Braut Haaland has undeniably cemented his status as a global phenomenon, not just as Manchester City’s prolific goal-scorer but also on the international stage. Representing Norway, he has emerged as one of the top scorers in the 2026 World Cup, boasting an impressive seven goals. Just weeks prior, the president of Borussia Dortmund, the club where Haaland shone for two and a half years in the Ruhr region, offered a revealing hint regarding his impending move to Real Madrid.

Last month, the name of Erling Braut Haaland surfaced prominently during Enrique Riquelme’s campaign for the presidency of Real Madrid. Challenging Florentino Pérez for the top position at the club, Riquelme had publicly declared on a television program that, if elected, he would commit to signing Manchester City’s formidable striker. Ultimately, Pérez secured re-election to lead the esteemed Merengue institution. It appears that the prospect of acquiring Haaland continues to occupy a significant place in his long-term strategic plans.
Real Madrid’s long-standing pursuit of Haaland
Even before Kylian Mbappé’s anticipated arrival at Real Madrid in 2024, Erling Haaland was a major transfer target for the Spanish giants, with their interest dating back to 2021. A year later, the Norwegian international departed Borussia Dortmund to join Manchester City. Despite rapidly becoming an icon for City over five seasons, Haaland reportedly still harbors the ambition to one day don the iconic white jersey. This sentiment was echoed by the president of Borussia Dortmund in early June.
“I believe he will play there within two or three years”
“I am very familiar with his thoughts, and I can confirm that he admires Real Madrid and aspires to play for them in the future. However, he will undoubtedly continue to play for Manchester City next season. He genuinely loves Real Madrid and makes no secret of it. I anticipate he will join them within two or three years, but not in the immediate future. He has not committed to any other club, as his father has stated,” revealed Hans-Joachim Watzke amidst the intense Real Madrid presidential campaign. Fans will now simply have to await Haaland’s eventual arrival at Santiago Bernabeu as a new star for the Casa Blanca.
