The deadliest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s recent history continues to worsen, with the Bundibugyo strain—currently without an approved vaccine or targeted treatment—spreading rapidly since its emergence in Ituri province on May 15. The virus has now infiltrated additional eastern regions, including North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele, and Tshopo, while also crossing into neighboring Uganda. Despite the deployment of emergency response teams from global NGOs like Medair and World Vision, containment efforts remain insufficient.
According to the latest figures released by the United Nations on August 3, citing data from the World Health Organization as of July 30, confirmed cases have surged to 3,748, with 1,587 fatalities—translating to a staggering 44% mortality rate. The situation has deteriorated further in the past week alone, with 567 new infections and 296 deaths reported. This marks the highest weekly toll since the epidemic began, underscoring the virus’s relentless advance. Tragically, the crisis has also claimed the lives of 44 healthcare workers, while 151 medical professionals have contracted the disease since the outbreak started.
In response to the escalating emergency, the United Nations has acknowledged that “response capacities must now be significantly scaled up”. The International Medical Corps, in collaboration with UN agencies, is preparing to expand critical interventions, including isolation units, contact tracing, and community engagement initiatives to curb transmission.
