Deteriorating security in Tillabéry after jihadist attack video surfaces

Jihadist groups release footage of military assault in Niger’s Tillabéry region

A newly released video by armed factions operating near the Niger-Mali-Burkina Faso border claims to document the June 17, 2026, assault on the Inates military base in western Niger’s Tillabéry region. The footage and accompanying statements depict a coordinated operation, beginning with mortar strikes on military installations followed by a multi-pronged assault using automatic weapons and grenade launchers.

Claimed tactics and military losses

The assailants allege they encircled the base before launching their offensive, setting up ambushes around the perimeter to block retreat routes and cut off reinforcements. According to their account, Nigerian soldiers offered limited resistance before attempting to withdraw under heavy fire.

The video’s narrators assert that at least 80 Nigerian troops were killed, along with the destruction of seven armored vehicles, six pickup trucks, and nine fuel tankers. They also claim to have seized 20 pickup trucks, 18 machine guns, a sniper rifle, multiple grenade launchers, three mortars, and substantial quantities of ammunition. These figures remain unverified by Nigerian authorities or independent observers.

Propaganda and regional security concerns

Armed groups frequently use such footage as a propaganda tool, exaggerating or omitting details to project strength, intimidate opponents, and bolster recruitment. While the authenticity of the attack is not in question, the veracity of the claimed casualties and material losses cannot be independently confirmed.

The incident underscores the worsening security situation in Tillabéry, where military forces face increasingly complex and sophisticated attacks. Despite shifts in counterinsurgency strategies and enhanced partnerships with foreign allies, armed factions continue to demonstrate their ability to execute high-level operations against well-defended positions.

The release of this video serves as more than just documentation of violence—it is a calculated message. By showcasing their operational capabilities, the groups aim to erode the morale of security forces and signal their enduring presence to all actors involved in the Sahel’s counterinsurgency efforts.
