After 18 seasons of whistle-blowing at the highest level, Deniz Aytekin officially closed his refereeing chapter on Saturday in Munich. The Bayern Munich versus 1. FC Köln fixture (5-1) marked the emotional end to a career that spanned 254 Bundesliga games and over 650 matches across Europe’s top competitions.

Few referees have etched their names into football history like Aytekin. His defining moment came in 2017 during the Barcelona’s unforgettable Champions League comeback against Paris Saint-Germain, a night that solidified his reputation as one of the game’s most respected officials. This past weekend, as the final whistle echoed through the Allianz Arena, even Bayern’s star striker Harry Kane rushed to pay his respects.

An emotional farewell to the pitch

Visibly moved, the 47-year-old German official wiped away tears multiple times on the field. “After nearly two decades in the Bundesliga, after belonging to this incredible football family, leaving isn’t easy. I’m profoundly grateful, especially with everyone who has been so important to me by my side,” he shared, his voice trembling with emotion. “The Bundesliga has been extraordinary—being part of this league for so long, experiencing so many unforgettable moments up close… I will never forget these experiences.”

Bayern Munich’s management also honored Aytekin with a heartfelt tribute on their official channels: “Dear Deniz Aytekin, congratulations on your refereeing career! After today’s match, we wish you all the best for the future!”

Though Aytekin’s distinguished career has concluded, his legacy as a fair and authoritative figure on the pitch will undoubtedly endure. The football world now turns its attention to the next generation of referees who will follow in his footsteps.
